JAGA’S CLARET JUG EVENT PUTS BIG SMILE ON
88-YEAR-OLD HYDE PARK GC OWNER BILLY MAXWELL’S FACE

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Thirty teams were on hand at Hyde Park Golf Club today to participate in the 3rd Billy Maxwell Claret Jug golf tournament and to honor the legendary West Texas native who has made Jacksonville his home since purchasing the storied west side golf course 46 years ago, in 1971.

Maxwell, who turns 88 on July 23rd, was feted prior to play with a ceremony on the Hyde Park’s first tee. After remarks and kibitzing from two of his closest friends and fellow TPC Sawgrass “Munchkins”, Bob Dickson and Duke Butler III, Mr. Maxwell slugged a drive of almost 200 yards right down the middle without so much as a practice swing. The rest of the day was nothing but sunshine, golf and great fellowship.
Maxwell (1951) and Dickson (1967) share the distinction of being former U.S. Amateur champions. The event had another U.S. Amateur connection with Peter Kuchar, father of 1997 champion Matt, teaming with Dickson. The Dickson/Kuchar duo won their division’s low gross prize.

Former U.S. Amateur champions Bob Dickson & Billy Maxwell share a laugh.

The competition was split into two flights – the Maxwell Division and the Blocker Division – based on combined team handicaps. The winners were:
